Can the Virtual World Save the Physical World?

by Meredith on October 15, 2007

Today is Blog Action Day — the topic is the environment.

Yes, given my past career history as a public information officer for a local government recycling program, I could write a list of hints and tips for saving the environment — but I think that the rest of the blogophere may have that covered.  Lately, I’ve thinking about how enabling people to work virtually might really be a solution that makes sense both environmentally and socially.

I have been working virtually for about a year.  Here are the ways I am living more lightly…

1. I don’t have a commute (well — I still take my daughter to school — but I’m not driving to work on top of that…)

2.  Because I don’t work at an office — I eat home more often (saving gas and money)

3.  My paper production has gone down significantly — my work is now completely virtual

4. I don’t consume as much — I don’t need to spend as much money on clothing because I’m not going into the office every day.

5. I can live in a less populated and less polluted place.

No, not all jobs can be done virtually — but imagine a country where most people worked from home.  Much less traffic — better environment, maybe a better society because people can be at home more???.

It seems like lots of other Work At Home Moms realize the advantages of WAHM helping the environment.  Here are some other Mom Masterminds members that participated in Blog Action Day:
