My preschool SEO experiment

by Meredith on May 17, 2008

My daughter goes to a fabulous preschool which until recently didn’t even have a web page. The school’s recruiting efforts were somewhat hampered by a lack of  page. The preschool is part of our local synagogue and due to politics and the schedule of the web developer — we were very limited in what we could put up and I have no control over keywords, headlines or any other tricks on the site itself to get rankings.  Worse yet, the page is done in frames so there really isn’t the opportunity for individual keywords.  Having a web page doesn’t do any good if you aren’t on the radar of the search engines.

So.. I decided to do a little experiment to see if some random linking might help get my daughter’s school at least on the first page of Google for "Jewish Preschool Albuquerque".  Not a very competitive category, I must admit.

Here’s what I did:

1. I linked to the school on every one of my websites and blogs where it was appropriate.

2.  I put up a squidoo page  for the preschool.

3. I posted a tweet on Twitter about my experiment

4. I used stumble upon to stumble on the website.

I was going to send out a message to the other preschool parents asking them to link to the site and/or comment on the squidoo lens — but I decided that was *way* too geeky.  Nonetheless, my small efforts were successful, we are now #2 on google for Jewish preschools in Albuquerque.

The lesson in all of this (especially for local businesses) is that your keywords may not be all that competitive and a few links from other sites may be all you need to vastly improve your search engine ratings.
